Spotlight: Columbia University trains next generation of data crunchers
New York's Columbia University is creating an institute to train the next generation of data scientists and engineers beginning this fall. The Institute for Data Sciences and Engineering will start with a four-course certification program teaching algorithms in data, machine learning and data visualization. The program will be integrated throughout the institute's six centers: smart cities, new media, financial analytics, health analytics, cybersecurity and foundations of data science. The institute hopes it can help fill the shortage of data analysts, which was identified by McKinsey and company to be as much as 190,000.
