SAP, Reuters partner on election coverage

In what is perhaps the most contentious U.S. presidential election, when all previous campaign models appear broken, data-driven journalism becomes even more crucial to correctly interpreting, assessing and analyzing current events for the voting public. To aid in the endeavor, Reuters and SAP have announced a partnership to supercharge Reuters' data journalism for U.S. presidential election coverage.

This partnership means Reuters is now using SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud service as the backbone for the Reuters Polling Explorer, and SAP Mobile Platform to build Reuters' new White House Run mobile app. Reuters editorial teams are also using SAP Lumira software for analytics, data search, data exploration and visualizations.

"Digital technologies are transforming politics and elections and turning American voters into digital voters," said Jennifer Morgan, president, SAP North America, in the announcement.

"Having access to real-time, data-driven information and public sentiment not only enables journalists to create engaging and compelling content but also empowers consumers and citizens with unique insights into the 2016 U.S. presidential election and the state of world affairs more broadly."

Data journalism has firmly taken root across the media sector as journalists and news organizations struggle to report in real-time in an instant, always-on world.

While breaking news has always posed a challenge in news reporting, it now breaks in many channels, increasingly fracturing reporters' attention.  Further, most of those channels produce unstructured data such as social media and texts, instant messages and emails to journalists. But that's not the only data journalists must comb and analyze continuously through the day. In terms of political reporting specifically, journalists and bloggers must also take into account myriad disparate data ranging from candidates' past speeches and performance records to entrance and exit voter polling and everything in between.

The job is made all the harder by the disruption of traditional campaign models leading to the need to correctly analyze emerging political trends, disruptor candidates, and the split in the GOP.

 "The U.S. presidential election is one of the most important events this year, and data plays a key role in understanding it," said Daniel Mandell, chief revenue officer of Reuters Media, in the announcement.

That just may be the understatement of the year.
