Actian Corp. a big data management solutions provider and owner of the analytic database Vectorwise, and Pervasive Software Inc. have announced that they are merging today.

Actian will acquire all of Pervasive's outstanding shares for $9.20 per share or approximately $161.9 million.

Steve Shine, president and CEO of Actian, said big data is an opportunity and a challenge for organizations in every industry, and data management and insight represent big opportunities for companies looking to unlock the business value in their big data.

Together, the companies claim to have tens of thousands of complex data management implementations in various countries.

Actian's Vectorwise currently holds multiple records for performance while Pervasive's big data and analytics software enables organizations to leverage Hadoop-era clusters for insights on large data sets, the Actian announcement said. Actian was formerly known as Ingres.

Pervasive is scheduled to announce its fiscal year 2013 second-quarter results after the close of market on Tuesday. The company reported in October that its net income more than doubled.
